The game boasts nearly 12 million players worldwide and actually is the Guinness World record holder for the most popular multiplayer online role-playing game. The online game is the fourth released game in the Warcraft fantasy universe and was released Nov. 23, 2004. The release celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Warcraft universe. The game became popular among teenagers and adults, mainly because of the openness available. Players virtually are allowed to do what they want while playing the game, instead of following playing instructions.

The hype and publicity leading up to the release of World of Warcraft were not disappointed following the release of the worldwide game. It received near perfect reviews from gaming critics. It also won numerous awards, including best game and graphics. Because the game is the fourth Warcraft game, its graphics and settings were greatly enhanced from the original games. The makers knew there would be a following with their game, but they also knew they really had to wow players. They did this by turning the game into an online gaming forum. The possibility of growth and development were endless online. It was a risk, but considering nearly 12 million people play the game monthly, it was a risk worth taking.

World of Warcraft originally was released in North America only, but following the game's huge success, launches in Europe and Asia soon followed. Although the game essentially is the same game it was in 2004, there have been updates and improvements to fix any glitches the game may have had. Because of the game's popularity, there doesn't appear to be an end any time soon in the phenomenon the game has created. Its sales continue to rise each year, which speaks volumes for the original design and idea. Players can't seem to get enough of this masterpiece.

This especially is true when you consider World of Warcraft has two expansion games under its belt. The Burning Crusade was released in early 2007, while Wrath of the Lich King was released in late 2008. Although people waited anxiously for the original release, players all over the globe will say it was worth the wait because they get to play the best online game in history. Because of the game's high reputation, there only can be more great things from the World we call Warcraft.
